Check out the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 for iPhone and iPad
If you’re a gadget freak, then the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 is going to blow your socks off, just like the first version did twelve months ago.
Shown off at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, the AR.Drone 2.0 takes what was already a super cool and easy to fly iPhone-controlled quadricopter, and somehow manages to make it even more amazing. Featuring a new 720p HD camera and new flying aids, the 2.0 release of our favorite flying machine just took iPhone-related toys to the next level while keeping it just one step ahead of the competition.
Oh, and it now works with the iPad, too…
Beyond the inclusion of that new HD camera that is mounted to the helicopter’s nose, we think the biggest improvement is the inclusion of a pressure sensor, alongside a new compass which combined make the AR.Drone 2.0 even easier to fly than its predecessor. The compass especially means that forward is always the direction you think it is. If you’ve ever tried to fly a model helicopter, you’ll know what we mean!
The pressure sensor also mean that the Drone can now go even higher and still remain completely stable. We suspect the limiting factor for range will now likely be the strength of your Wi-Fi signal, which is pretty awesome in itself. Imagine flying above rooftops in a city and recording awesome 720p video at the same time, all using your iPad as your navigation device.
Expect the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 to go on sale during the second quarter of 2012. It will retail for $299.
Worth every penny if you ask us!

Rumor: Hands-On With iPad 3 Shell Reveals Familiar Design, Improved Cameras
As he has done in the past, Jeremy Horwitz of iLounge has claimed to have seen the rear shell of the next-generation iPad. He also revealed a prototype shell of the iPad 2 during CES last year and correctly predicted the tablet’s basic upgrades and features.
This time, Horwitz has followed up on his previous iPad 3 report with the claim that he has touched the rear shell of Apple’s next-generation iPad. He notes that the exterior design of the device hasn’t changed, but he does expect better cameras and a higher-quality screen.
Yesterday, one day ahead of the 2012 CES, I saw what’s supposedly the next-generation iPad. I’d show you a picture, but there’s honestly nothing to be seen. Think iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S: this device so resembles the iPad 2 that differences are only obvious when they’re placed next to each other. From the back, you could walk past this new iPad on display and have no idea that anything had changed.
The next-generation iPad’s exterior is reportedly “unnoticeable on first inspection,” meaning that most cases and accessories should work with the upcoming device. The rear-facing camera is supposedly bigger and sliver-ringed, much like the iPhone 4S’s camera without the LED flash. The iPad 2′s cameras are so terrible that it would be a real tragedy for Apple to not increase the quality.
Rumors have suggested that the next iPad will set itself apart with a Retina-like display. Horwitz seems to agree:
From the front, the next iPad and iPad 2 appear to look basically the same

AllMail: Add Mass Mail Options to the Stock Mail App
AllMail is a jailbreak tweak that adds a variety of “mass edit” options to the stock Mail app. For instance, you can select all, delete all, and even hide all emails in one swift motion.
Although iOS 5 has brought some improvements to the Mail app, it’s still a lot better when accompanied by jailbreak tweaks like AllMail and others…
We previously looked at AllMail when it was initially released, but it was brought to our attention that we had never created a video walkthrough of the tweak in action.
I have to say that while my experience was generally good, I did notice a few crashes here and there when using the hide mail option. Your mileage may vary.
If interested, AllMail can be purchased on Cydia for $1.50. Let me know what you think about it in the comment section below.

Magisto Makes Your Home Movies Cool With a Single Click
The Consumer Electronics Show is typically a hardware-focused venu. But there are some software developers who use the event to launch new mobile applications.
The folks over at Sightera Technologies, for example, have just used the show to unveil their latest creation: Magisto. The iPhone app allows you to create entertaining, edited short films out of your boring old home movies…

Snappy5: The Fastest Way to Snap Pictures With Your iPhone
I know I’m not alone in my predicament, but I can’t count the number of times I’ve missed a good photo opportunity because I was either too slow on the draw, or iOS itself was too slow to load the camera UI.
Snappy5 is a tweak that aims to minimize, if not eliminate that annoying issue. It works by using Activator to quickly pull up the Camera app and automatically snapping a photo or filming a video.
If you find yourself missing a lot of great memories, then you definitely want to check this out…
Snappy5 will set you back $1.99 on the Cydia store, but it’s more than worth it if it helps you permanently recall some of life’s most interesting moments that you would have otherwise missed.
You will need a jailbroken device running iOS 5 to install Snappy5, but the good news is that those who purchased older versions of the tweak can download the update for free.

Liquipel Could be a Game-Changer for Waterproofing Devices
Well, there’s a handful of case options that claim to make your iPhone waterproof, but they’re either bulky or extremely unattractive (see DryCase). Liquipel, however, is trying to change that with its new invisible waterproof coating…
TheNextWeb says Liquipel’s latest invention, a microscopic coating that protects electronics from water damage, could change the world of electronics forever. And we might have to agree. Watch.
Although the company won’t divulge any specific details about what it is or what it’s made of, it describes the product as an invisible coating that bonds to your device at the molecular level (inside and out) to repel water.
Don’t get too excited though. Liquipel’s product isn’t available at your local Best Buy. You actually have to send your iPhone (or other handset) into the company along with $59 to have them apply it, and we’re not sure the average person is going to be willing to that.
But the mere fact that the technology exists is still incredible. Here’s hoping manufacturers eventually pick up on this and start applying Liquipel to their products before they ship them.
What do you think?

iOS Developer Bypasses the App Store and Sells Games on eBay
If there was ever any proof needed that the App Store is not always laced with gold and rainbows, then this is surely it!
Disappointed with the attention that two of its games were receiving, both the paid for and free versions of Cannon Collision, LLLo Inc. has made the source code and all associated graphics available via auction using the ever popular eBay.
With the paid-for version of Cannon Collision currently retailing for a dollar, and the free version sporting ads, if anyone is looking to get their feet wet in the world of iOS games development, then this might be a place to start…
According to the company’s eBay listing, the auction also includes an hour of a developer’s time in order to help facilitate the transaction. It is worth noting that no Apple iTunes Connect accounts are being offered here, but merely the source code and media that go along with it. Should you win the auction you will also need to have your own developer account, currently costing $99 from Apple.
“You will be given the source code and I will make my developer available for 1 hour to change the admob and greystripe ads on the free version to your account and to add the apps to your own itunes connect account free of charge.”
A lack of publicity was the reason for the game’s downfall according to the developer, though we’re not sure the game’s premise of keeping bouncing balls from touching wasn’t partly the reason, too.
We’re fairly sure this is the first time an iOS game has been sold in such a manner, and with the auctions still at its starting price of $99, it might be the last, too.

Gametel Gamepad Now Compatible With iOS Devices
Considering how popular iOS has become as a mobile gaming platform, you would think that the market for iOS gaming accessories would be huge, but it’s really not. The iOS gaming peripheral space is actually quite small.
But it is slowly growing thanks to notable accessories like the iCade, the iControlPad, and now the Gametel Gamepad. The once Android-only wireless controller is all set to make its iOS debut at the Consumer Electronics Show next week…
Fructel has just announced that its popular Android wireless game controller now supports iOS devices. The peripheral clamps on to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and connects wirelessly to the device using bluetooth.
The Gamepad is compatible with hundreds of arcade titles in the iCade suite, as well as other select iOS games. The controller sports the ever-familiar d-pad layout with four action buttons and two side triggers. And perhaps most interesting, the folks at Fructel are claiming that the accessory has a battery life in upwards of 9 hours. Wow.

iPhone Usage Dropped Almost 5% During December
Despite what is sure to be a record-breaking month for Apple’s iPhone sales, it appears that the handset’s usage share may have actually fallen by almost 5%, if new figures are to be believed.
Advertising network Chikita has released data based on the number of ad impressions across its network while highlighting the top smartphone makers in the arena, with the iPhone seeing a reduction in its share during December.
The big gains came from Android-loving HTC and Samsung during the same period…
While the drop in share is an interesting statistic indeed, it is well worth noting that the iPhone is still the most popular device on the market, pushing Apple to almost 50% of the entire pie. Apple’s nearest competitor, according to Chitika’s figures, is HTC with almost 16%.

Mail More Photos: Attach More Than 5 Photos to an Email
iOS is a bit on the limited side when it comes to sending a multitude of emails from the Camera Roll. Apple has limited users to just 5 photo attachments if users want to use the built in email sharing option.
Fortunately, jailbreaking exists to get rid of such limitations. Check inside for a video walkthrough of Mail More Photos, a tweak that allows one to send a seemingly infinite amount of photos via email…
The developer of Mail More Photos included an extra option that tells you the total size of all of the photo attachments prior to sending. That way, you have good idea how long it’ll take and how much data you’ll use.

iPhone 4S Users Consume Double the Data of iPhone 4 Users
As wireless carriers have started cracking down on data usage, users have become more conscious of their megabytes. So much so that many smartphone owners have resorted to using applications to keep track of their activity.
Well it looks like data-conscious users who are still contemplating snagging Apple’s latest handset may have reason to worry. A new report shows that iPhone 4S owners use about double the data of that of iPhone 4 owners…
Reuters passes along a recent study from Arieso, a network management firm. The company’s findings show that iPhone 4S users transfer more than three times more data than iPhone 3G users, and about double of that of iPhone 4 owners.
Arieso suggests that the major increase in data usage is the result of Siri’s popularity. The iPhone 4S-exclusive, cloud-based digital assistant has been grabbing headlines left and right since Apple introduced it last October.
While Siri is obviously a factor, TheNextWeb points out several other components that could be considered liable for the increase in data usage. For starters, Apple recently introduced several iCloud-based services including PhotoStream, MusicMatch, iMessage, and more. It’s also worth noting that the iPhone 4S has a higher resolution camera than the iPhone 4, thus making picture upload files substantially bigger.
Regardless of what’s causing it, the fact is that the iPhone 4S more than likely uses a considerable amount of data given its available features. Of course if you’re one of the lucky few that have managed to hold on to an unlimited wireless data plan, you have nothing to worry about. But for everyone else, it’s something to keep in mind.
Has your data usage gone up since purchasing the iPhone 4S?

Analysts Predict Apple Sold 35 Million iPhones Over the Holidays
To put these numbers in perspective, Apple only sold 17 million iPhones in Q3 of last year, hitting just $28.3 billion in revenue. So you can see why some folks were taken a back by Cook’s predictions. But hey, anything can happen. Right?

Rumor: iPad 3 to Arrive in March with iPad 4 Joining in October
There’s no outrunning the rumor-mill, especially when the world is expecting a new iPhone or iPad just around the corner. While we’re barely coming down after the whole iPhone 5 craziness that surrounded the iPhone 4S release, it’s fair to say that we are now well and truly in iPad-silly season.
That said, we never expected to hear something like this report. According to the infamous Digitimes, Apple could be set to bring an iPad 3 to market as soon as March, only to follow that up with the release of the iPad 4 seven months later in October.
Citing component suppliers, Digitimes believes that the two-pronged attack is designed to stave off the impending influx of both new Android tablets and the release of Windows 8 machines later in the year.
The first tablet to be released, the iPad 3, is believed to sport a QXGA (1,536×2,048 pixels) display along with improved battery life as the rumors have suggested for some time now. Apple would also take the opportunity to reduce the price of the existing iPad 2, in effect offering a cut-price tablet to those not wishing to fork out for the top of the range machine.
Not content with just iPad 3 rumors, Digitimes also believes that the iPad 4 is closer to a release than we expected, with October being the proposed date. Little is known about this mythical creature, other than it would pack improved internals and be aimed at fighting off the expected influx of Windows 8-powered tablets.
Both of the rumored devices are expected to retain the same 9.7-inch screen that we have come to love, with no mention of a smaller 7-inch device on the horizon.
Riiight.

China Unicom Offering Free iPhone 4S Handsets With Contract
Carriers in China were only recently given the go-ahead to start selling the iPhone 4S, but they’ve already figured out how to use the handset to drive business. For example, China Unicom has quite the promotion involving the new device.
Bloomberg is reporting this morning that the world’s third largest cell phone provider is about to launch a campaign that will allow customers to pick up Apple’s latest smartphone for free, as long as they’re ok with a long-term contract…
The promotion, which starts January 13th, will allows users to pick up a free iPhone 4S for signing a multi-year contract with the carrier. Subscribers willing to sign a two-year deal will get the 16GB model, and those that sign a three-year deal the 32GB.
Let’s do some quick math. To get the free iPhone 4S, customers must sign up for a monthly plan starting at 286 yuan, or $45. If customers sign a two year contract at that price, they’ll end up paying China Unicom $1080 over the course of the contract. Now if we know that the 16GB iPhone 4S costs $650, we can gather that the carrier still makes roughly $400 per “free” handset. That is, assuming the customers continue to pay their bills.
While we love the sound of a free iPhone 4S, analysts believe that the move is far too aggressive. They’re thinking that all of the new customers will add weight to its already struggling data network, which will obviously cost more money to maintain. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

iPad Survives 100,000 Foot Fall With G-Form Case
Until last year, G-Form was known for its extreme sports protective gear (elbow/knee pads). Then it introduced the Extreme Sleeve case for iPad, and it is now known for making one of the most durable tablet cases around.
The company has gone through great lengths to demonstrate the Sleeve’s toughness, dropping a bowling ball on an iPad wrapped in the case, and even hurling one from an airplane. And now it’s taken things to a whole new level…
The folks at G-Form have upped the anti with its latest promo video. Using a weather balloon, they’ve managed to launch an iPad into space wrapped in one of G-Form’s new Extreme Edge cases, only to have it free-fall a staggering 100,000 ft.
Did it survive? Watch.
G-Form’s VP of innovations, Thom Cafaro, explains the unusual stunt:
“As far as we know, this is the first iPad ever in space. And definitely it’s the first ipad that’s ever free-fallen from space and survived to play more movies. We are usually known for making the most protective gear on the planet, so we decided why not raise the bar to off the planet too.”
You can find the Extreme Edge and other durable tablet cases in G-Form’s online store.

TidyTilt: A Smart Cover for the iPhone
Smart Covers are awesome! If you own an iPad 2 then you just absolutely, positively must own a Smart Cover. It’s a stand. It’s a cover. It’s smart. What’s not to like?
We’re not really sure why Apple hasn’t made a similar accessory for the iPhone, but there is a new Kickstarter project that’s proposing an iPhone-optimized Smart Cover with a unique twist.
In fact, the TidyTilt even has one or two tricks up its sleeve. Tricks that mean the project has already met its modest $10,000 goal, raising $47,000 to date.
What exactly is the TidyTilt? In the words of the project’s owners:
“… is an earbud cord wrap, multi-position kickstand, and mount for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. TidyTilt takes up less space than any one of these devices – yet does all three things – without adding something extra to carry.”
The addition of the earbud holding capability gives the TidyTilt a feature the official iPad 2 Smart Cover does not boast. And as the promotional video shows, anything that keeps our cables tidy is a good thing!
The cover itself attaches to the iPhone’s rear panel using a magnetic frame that adds minimal size to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. You also have the added benefit of meaning of mounting your iPhone on any magnetic surface. Genius!

ProTube: An Alternative YouTube App for Jailbreakers
You know it. I know it. The stock YouTube app that comes with your iOS device is simply an abomination. Yes, it’s that terrible.
So anything that can improve over the stock app is generally received with a warm response. For that matter, even YouTube’s web app is leaps and bounds over the stock YouTube app.
ProTube is the latest YouTube alternative to make its way to Cydia, and it attempts to pick up where the YouTube web app left off. Does it succeed? Check inside for my full breakdown…
As soon as you open ProTube, one thing is immediately apparent. This is not a built-from scratch app by any means. This is simply a wrapper on top of YouTube’s web app.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, I mean, why re-create the wheel when you already have one? Just don’t go into it expecting something fancy or new, or else you’ll come away disappointed.
The primary function of ProTube is providing downloading capabilities for both video and audio. Sadly, my experience with both was a bit half-baked.
Downloads worked most of the time, but I experienced an odd issue that saw ProTube downloading the same video over and over, even when it appeared to be downloading a brand new video of my choosing.
Along with that, the audio conversion and downloads timed out on me every time. Either I received an error message, or it stuck on “converting” forever. Bear in mind that these were 1-2 minutes videos that I was attempting to download at most.
One thing that I do particularly like about ProTube is how easy it is to share, export, or rename videos once you have them downloaded. It even allows you to watch your videos mid-download.
ProTube promises to block ads, but ads have never been much an intrusion for me, especially on YouTube’s mobile site, so I don’t have much to say about that one.
Overall, the app has promise. It’s built open YouTube’s competent web app, so it has the foundation to succeed. If some of the bugs can be worked out with downloading and a few more compelling features are added, then ProTube may be able to compete with some of Cydia’s best like MxTube and others. Until then, I’d hold off until a few more revisions are made.
Have you used ProTube? If so, what did you think?

Multiple patent applications, filed by Apple, were published by the US Patent and Trademark Office this morning. Three of the inventions revolve around Thunderbolt technology, and one in particular stands out: iOS device support.
Apple introduced Thunderbolt, an I/O platform that transfers data 20x faster than USB 2.0, last year in both its desktop and laptop computer lines. And now it looks like it could be bringing the tech to its popular mobile products…
PatentlyApple points to an excerpt from one of the filings: “a connection may be provided between a portable media player and a display, a computer and a portable media player, or between other types of devices.”
So what does that mean for the average user? Thunderbolt would allow you to transfer data between your iOS device and computer at breakneck speeds. It would also make for much quicker battery charging.
Of course, all of this would be dependent on whether your computer has a Thunderbolt port or not. And while all of Apple’s 2011 Mac computers have the tech, Windows computers do not. Apple doesn’t typically dabble in technology that hasn’t been widely adopted (see LTE).
Nevertheless, we like the thought of Thunderbolt support in future iOS devices. The current USB cable has been around for ages it seems and its data transfer rates feel archaic in comparison to other technology.

Apple Pays Company $5 Million to Settle Patent Lawsuit
In April 2009, Taiwanese chip and touch screen maker Elan Microelectronics Corp. filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the Cupertino-based company had infringed upon many of its touch-based patents. Apple counterclaimed in a Northern California district court with allegations that Elan had violated multiple Apple patents itself.
The patent in question, U.S. Patent Number 5,825,352, is described as a “multiple fingers contact sensing method for emulating mouse buttons and mouse operations on a touch sensor pad.” The U.S. International Trade Commission investigated the claims in April 2010, but ultimately ruled in June 2010 that Elan had failed to establish that Apple was violating the patent.
The case remained unresolved until today…
Apple and Elan Microelectronics Corp. reached a mutual cross-licensing agreement that authorizes both companies to continue using technologies based on the infringing patents. As part of the agreement, Apple has agreed to pay the Taiwanese firm an out-of-court settlement worth $5,000,000.
Apple has been involved in a number of lawsuits worldwide, with many cases involving some of the company’s top competitors. In April 2010, Apple sued South Korean handset maker Samsung based on claims that its Galaxy tablets and smartphones copied the look and feel of the iPad and iPhone. More recently, Apple won a patent case with HTC that called for an import ban on the infringing devices effective April 19th, 2012.

Rumor: iPad 3 to Feature FaceTime HD and Improved Rear Camera
Aside from housing the same display as its year-old predecessor, most of the criticism the iPad 2 received was aimed at its cameras. And between its VGA-quality front-facing sensor and dismal rear shooter, it was well-warranted.
But it looks like things will be different this time around. The latest iPad 3 rumor suggests that Apple’s upcoming tablet will feature some major camera upgrades including a front camera capable of FaceTime HD, and more…
The gossip comes from iLounge Editor in Chief Jeremy Horwitz, who started tweeting iPad 3 details this afternoon. He credits his knowledge to an unnamed source who has apparently seen the unannounced tablet.
From his Twitter timeline:
“A few next-gen iPad notes, ahead of the show. Both cameras are getting upgrades. Front goes HD, rear becomes iPhone 4/4S-like (bigger). Body of the next iPad is, as we previously reported, getting just a little thicker to accommodate new parts – little

It looks like Spotify CEO Daniel Ek is a self proclaimed “Siri-holic” after the streaming outfit’s head man waxed lyrical about his love for Apple’s digital assistant.
But that’s not all. During an interview for Forbes, Ek gave a sneak peek at a potential new feature that could be on its way to the Spotify iPhone app at some point in the future. iOS 5 Glitch Exposes Photo Albums on Locked iPhones
Canadian tech consultant Ade Barkah has uncovered a security bug in iOS 5 that allows for someone to bypass an iPhone’s lock screen and view the device’s photo albums, even without knowing the passcode.
In iOS 5, there is a convenient button on the lock screen, which appears by double-tapping the home button, that allows for you to launch the camera application. Normally, Apple has a restriction that prohibits you from viewing any images on your iPhone’s camera roll while the device is locked, however, during his travels from Canada to Argentina, Barkah discovered that Apple’s restriction is merely based on the iPhone’s system time…
If the iPhone’s clock is ever rolled back, any picture with a time stamp greater than the iPhone’s system clock can now be viewed without a passcode. While it does not occur frequently, an iPhone’s clock could be rolled backwards as a result of a software glitch or by syncing with an erroneous source such as a computer with an incorrect time.
Apple is notorious for releasing time-related bugs, but is usually quick to release a software update to patch the issues. iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners should be cautious before updating to any such software update, as Apple might patch the untethered jailbreak vulnerability that iOS hacker pod2g is currently working on for A5-equipped devices.

Kok HeanIf there’s a pass code, the person wouldn’t even be able to access the Settings app, let alone set the time backwards. And I don’t think people would want to set their time back anyway, unless they want to cheat in games or something. I think that a time stamp is good for now.

Verizon Sees 4.2 Million iPhone Sales For Last Quarter
Verizon has reported a record-breaking number of iPhone sold during the fourth quarter of 2011:
Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile carrier, sold 4.2 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, more than doubling from the third quarter, said Fran Shammo, finance chief of the company’s parent.
The iPhone sales will narrow gross margins at the wireless business by 500 to 600 basis points, Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications, said today at a Citigroup Inc. event in San Francisco.
