Microsoft brings iPad support to SkyDrive app for iOS
While there is plenty of debate as to if Microsoft is late to the personal cloud storage game, there is little debate that they are making a hard push to gain users. Part of that effort has been producing an iOS app that allows iPhone users to gain access to their SkyDrive files on their device. This weekend Microsoft released a sizable update to their SkyDrive app for iOS, bringing iPad support amongst the many updates to the app.
The biggest change to the SkyDrive app is that it is now a universal app. One download and you have access to your files on either device. Microsoft was smart and also added support for the Retina Display of both the iPhone 4/4S (which was

How To change the font in Notes on your iPhone or iPad
One of the least discussed and often overlooked apps that comes with iOS is the Notes app. The app gives you the ability to capture notes and organize them so you can keep track of anything from a grocery list to meeting notes. It has been included with iOS since the early days and with syncing coming with Mountain Lion later this summer, Notes will take on a much larger role than it has in the past.
With the release of iOS 5 last year, Apple gave users the ability to change the font of their Notes to allow for a more personalized experience. Changing the font is easy and is kept with the note as you synchronize them between your iPhone and iPad via iCloud. In this How To I will show you how to make this change on your iPhone or iPad.
Changing the font is done via one screen in Settings on either your iPhone or your iPad. Go into Settings and scroll down

What is Sandboxing? It is as simple as it sounds
On Friday of last week, June 1st, Apple’s twice-extended-but-for-real-now deadline requiring developers to “sandbox” their applications passed. It was a day that was coming but developers still had (have) reservations about the new requirements from Cupertino. For consumers however, it was a deadline that likely passed without so much as a nod of acknowledgement.
And that is exactly how Apple wants it to happen.
By definition, Sandboxing is when a application is coded in such a way that can only access specific data and features of the OS that the app is granted access to on your system. In other words, it cannot go and access anything and everything on your system – data or resources. The idea of course is to keep every app self contained which leads to better security and better malware prevention. And make no mistake, Apple is serious about sandboxing. Even their own apps have to be sandboxed.
Sandboxing and the Mac App Store really go hand-in-hand. Apple wants you and me to download every app for our Macs from the App Store to assure a better buying experience but also to provide a better security experience. For developers, the App Store – for Mac and for iOS – is where you want your apps to be if you want them downloaded (required actually for iOS) so developers will have little choice if they want their apps to be in the App Store. Sandbox it or it will not be approved. Keep in mind that sandboxing is not required for apps that are not in the App Store and for Mac owners, you can still download apps directly from the developer without having to go through the store.
Tied to that, we as end users should not see any noticeable change in how an app functions on our Macs once it is sandboxed. If the app wants to gain access to a part of your Mac system that it isn’t allowed to do so, the developer will either have to change that feature or disable it all together. So if there is any user noticeable impact, it could be that one of your favorite apps functions slightly different than it did before it was sandboxed.
From Apple’s perspective, sandboxing allows them to control the user experience to cut down on the incidents of malware. This isn’t Apple being draconian but rather being protective. We all remember the Flashback Trojan from earlier this year and it is this drive towards sandboxing apps that Apple wants to prevent such an event from happening again. Is it completely water-tight? No. Given enough determination and the fact that as a Mac owner I can download apps from outside the Mac App Store still, the chances of malware happening will continue. This is where the upcoming Gatekeeper functionality in OS X Mountain Lion will come into play. Gatekeeper can be configured in such a way that prevents apps not from the App Store from being installed. If the app is not certified – and I’m willing to bet that sandboxing will be required for certification of an app – it will not be installed on your Mac depending on how Gatekeeper is configured.
Ultimately sandboxing apps is a good idea and will likely prevent support and malware issues for Apple and users in the future. The question will be if developers willingly conform to make sure their apps are in the Mac App Store or by-pass it and sell their applications directly. Both have pluses and minuses but it is clear, like many things, if you want to play in Apple’s playground, you have to play by their rules.

Apple to navigate its way away from Google Maps this year
The Wall Street Journal has a lengthy and detailed report on Apple’s impending move from Google Maps as the mapping application in iOS to a new proprietary solution. It is the latest and strongest evidence yet that Google Maps may be gone from your iPhone and iPad with the release of iOS 6.
The article, written by Jessica E. Vascellaro and Amir Efrati, outlines the relationship between Apple and Google since the inception of the iPhone in 2007. It covers the what could best be described as a rocky relationship between the two tech giants with the release of the Android mobile OS being the tipping point for much of the rancor between the companies we see today. Indeed as has been well documented in the past, Steve Jobs felt that Eric Schmidt and Google blindsided him with the release of Android.
If you are interested in the back story of how Apple got to the point of developing their own mapping solution, this is a fantastic read and I highly recommend spending the time to read it in detail.
If however you are looking for juicy nuggets on what the new mapping solution will be, you’ll need to look elsewhere. The article does hint that we could see a preview of it as early as next week at WWDC but no significant details of the mapping solution are covered in the article.

How To enable Multitasking Gestures on your iPad
One of the features in iOS 5 for iPad is the ability to use Multitasking Gestures. The feature has been around since iOS 4 but until the release of iOS 5, it was only available to developers. With the release of iOS 5 it became a public-facing feature.
The concept is simple: By using 4 or 5 fingers, you can easily move between open applications on your iPad by swiping left or right, you can minimize an app by pinching your fingers together and you can view the multitasking bar by swiping up on your iPad. For me the most useful feature is the swiping left and right to different apps. If you are a Mac OS X Lion

Quickoffice acquired by Google
It comes as a bit of surprise but leading office productivity app developer Quickoffice has been acquired by Google. The news was published on the company blog today.
Now, we are ushering in a new chapter with Google. By combining the magic of Google’s intuitive solutions with Quickoffice’s powerful products, our shared vision for anytime, anywhere productivity can only grow.
For some this will be welcome news. For others, me included, it will be met with caution. Google is notorious for keeping things in perpetual beta and tinkering with things. I’m a big fan of Quickoffice and I can only hope that Google continues development on it and take it to the next level.

Rumor: Apple digital storefronts to get makeovers
Apple's iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore are in for a makeover, unconfirmed reports suggest. With the rollout of iOS 6, Apple's three digital storefronts will reportedly receive an overhaul aimed at improving interactivity when customers make purchases. While all three have received minor usability tweaks in the past, the new overhaul is said to be more extensive, and have a considerable focus on social sharing.Details on the makeover are scarce, but it is believed that Apple's reported closer ties with Facebook will likely play a big role. Facebook integration is said to be in testing for the iTunes Store, and similar features may appear in Apple's other digital storefronts, 9to5Mac is reporting.
Despite Apple's acquisition of app-discovery service Chomp earlier this year, the storefront renovation is not expected to do much in the way of improving app accessibility or discovery. Apple may make improvements to app discovery in the coming months, but the integration of Chomp's technology isn't expected to be ready by the time iOS 6 launches.

iOS 6 expected to share new features in Mountain Lion
OS X Mountain Lion will not only include several features from iOS 5, but also features that will appear in iOS 6, according to sources for 9to5Mac. One of these is something called iCloud Tabs, which lists Safari tabs opened elsewhere, whether in iOS 6 or on a Mac. From this list, people will be able to pick tabs to reopen. On the iPhone and iPod touch the option button is said to be hidden behind the Bookmarks toolbar.iOS 6 will also reportedly get access to Mountain Lion's Mail VIP feature. This puts stars next to messages from a selected group of people, letting users identify the most important email in their inbox. VIPs should sync between iOS 6 and Mountain Lion via iCloud.
A third carryover is said to be Mountain Lion's "Do Not Disturb." This quickly toggles alerts and banner notifications, which can be especially useful when a person needs to concentrate or fall asleep. While the Mountain Lion option is located in the Notification Center, however, in iOS 6 users will need to delve into Settings to flip it on or off.
iOS 6 will likely make its first public appearance at WWDC 2012, which starts June 11th. One of the predominant highlights is expected to be a new Maps app, sporting 3D, a tweaked interface, and severed ties to Google.

Siri coming to iPad with iOS 6, sources claim
Apple will finally bring Siri to the iPad with the advent of iOS 6, claims 9to5Mac. The site quotes "trusted sources," who suggest that the change will be one of iOS 6's main selling points. All of the features from the iPhone version of Siri are expected to carry over except for anything specifically phone-related. The iPad interface should also operate in the same way, the key difference being that iPad users will only see a small window slide up from below, rather than a fullscreen interface.Apple has allegedly been testing the iPad version of Siri on both the third-generation iPad and the iPad 2. While the situation is uncertain, some of the 9to5 sources expect that Siri will be exclusive to the new iPad, much as it's currently limited to the 4S on the iPhone side. This may be to scale Siri support gradually, since any commands the software takes are actually processed on Apple servers.
Also unknown is whether Apple will show off Siri at WWDC 2012, which starts on June 11th, or if the company will wait until closer to iOS 6's launch, which may be in the fall if it coincides with a new iPhone. The sources do note, though, that Siri's voice recognition should work just fine on the iPad despite a person having their mouth further away from the microphone.

Scoot Pte switches aircraft to iPads to drop fuel costs
Singapore-based airline Scoot Pte has switched to iPads for in-flight entertainment in order to save fuel, Bloomberg notes. The company's CEO, Campbell Wilson, claims that the move cut off about 7 percent of the weight from planes received from Scoot's parent company, Singapore Airlines. This is despite increasing seating in the planes by 40 percent.Using conventional entertainment systems contributed in excess of two tons to the weight of each plane. Fuel economy is the "number one worry" for airlines, according to Wilson, since gas represents at least 40 percent of expenses. While business travelers on Scoot get to borrow an iPads for free, economy-class passengers must pay S$22 -- roughly $17 US -- for the same privilege.
Each iPad comes preloaded with movies, music, games, and TV shows. Eventually, however, Scoot says it will move content access to a onboard Wi-Fi network.

Microsoft confirms SmartGlass at E3 keynote event
Microsoft today confirmed the existence of SmartGlass at its E3 keynote. Previously rumored as hardware shown behind closed doors, in practice SmartGlass is an app for Windows 8, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android devices that lets them connect to the Xbox 360. Developers and content providers will have options to display more information or add more control for their apps, games, and TV shows.Game-related examples given throughout Microsoft's presentation include using a tablet to make plays in Madden, and an extra notifications system for Halo 4, saving players from having to pause the game to change options or read updates. For TV shows, a person might for instance use a tablet as an interactive map, pointing out the location of a scene in Game of Thrones during the episode's broadcast. A direct comparison could be made to the Wii U, which also follows the concept of a second screen, but which requires dedicated hardware.
TV and movie viewers will have the option of watching media on a tablet or phone, stopping, and then continuing where they left off on an Xbox at a later time. It was not mentioned which specific services would work in such a way, but considering the need to carry the media on a mobile device, it is likely to be the Zune store rather than a streaming service.
Also newly announced is Internet Explorer for Xbox 360, bringing web browsing to the console for the first time. Going further than Bing content search, Internet Explorer should allow full web access, with navigation through Kinect voice control and SmartGlass. Tablets and smartphones can manipulate an onscreen cursor, pinch to zoom, and select page elements.
SmartGlass is scheduled to launch later this year, with no mention as to if there is a cost for the app on mobile devices.

Firefox 13 now out with fresh home screen, SPDY support
Mozilla has now released the full version of its Firefox 13 web browser, the first beta version of which came out at the end of April. Those who didn't get the beta will be able to download the latest software on Tuesday. The most prominent changes include a new home and tab screens, along with the newfound compatibility of the Google-backed SPDY protocol. This should enable the browser to speed up load times of sites that support SPDY. The latest Firefox will also prioritize reloading tabs upon restarting the browser, doing so only when users click on them rather than all at once. It will need to be manually switched on, however.
The new home screen retains the Google search bar front and center, but users will now get quicker access to add-ons, settings, downloads, and more. New tabs result in a thumbnail view, mimicking what Chrome does. Favorite sites can be pinned here as well.
The release notes for Firefox 13 are available online, and the Windows and Mac versions are available online.

Parallels adds 'experimental' Windows 8 preview support
Parallels has updated its self-named OS virtualizer software, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, to be able to automatically download and install the recently-released Windows 8 Release Preview. As with its earlier update in March for the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, support is "experimental" and thus not fully supported as the final release of Windows 8 may make significant changes. The software also supports the Mountain Lion Developer Preview, Chrome OS and others.Current Parallels users can get the update through the normal "check for updates" option, and the 30-day trial version of the software has also been updated with the support. Developers and cutting-edge users who want to explore the new Windows 8 release can do so within the safety of an easily-scrapped virtual machine rather that risk any "production" machines on the untested OS, which Microsoft warns isn't final and could crash or corrupt files. The Mountain Lion Developer Preview is for registered developers only, but Parallels does allow authorized users to install it in either guest or host mode.
As with the previous version, users of Parallels Mobile can utilize the Windows 8 virtual machine via their iOS devices. The program also allows the easy install and virtualization of many other operating systems, including Ubuntu and Fedora Linux, Windows 7 and earlier versions, and OS X Lion as a "Guest" OS for Windows users.

Judge Koh has rejected the bid to ban some Samsung products, including the Galaxy 10.1 tablet, on procedural grounds. Dhr declared that the appeals court that returned the judgement to her last month must formally surrender jurisdiction back to her court before she could rule on the matter. No timetable has been given for the jurisdictional shift.Once the appeals court returns the matter, Apple can refile the request. The company had argued that Koh could issue the injunction in her court regardless of jurisdictional ownership in accordance with a 1951 case, United States v. El-O-Pathic Pharmacy, involving a district court acting prior to a appeals court mandate to protect the populace from mislabeled pharmaceuticals. Apple's (tenuous) link between the Galaxy 10.1 tablet and bogus drugs is best drawn from a court filing from last month: "Each day that Samsung continues to sell its infringing Tab 10.1 causes additional harm to Apple through design dilution, lost sales, lost market share, and lost future sales of tag-along products."
Yesterday's court session comes after the CEOs of both Apple and Samsung were ordered to negotiate a settlement in May, but talks between Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Y.K. Kim were unsuccessful. Judge Koh is hearing separate infringement cases between Apple and Samsung, and earlier decreed that the sides narrow the number of patents in question.

Dev Team offers update, unlock for 5.1.1 jailbreak
Hackers the iPhone Dev-Team has updated the tools Ultrasn0w and RedSn0w, apps that allow users to jailbreak and in some cases unlock the iPhone 4 and 3G or 3GS. Ultrasn0w has been updated to version 1.2.7, which offers to jailbreak and then unlock an iPhone 4 -- with the catch that the baseband must be the older 01.59.00 (up-to-date iPhone 4 will be on baseband 04.12.01). The RedSn0w update makes it easier to implement or restore an untethered jailbreak. The updates all focus around Apple's A4 and earlier devices, the iPhone 4 or earlier. Ultrasn0w will also unlock 3G or 3GS iPhone models that use basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 or 06.15.00, but not other versions. Late last month, a different group (Chronic Dev Team) released an app called Absinthe 2 that allowed A4 and A5 devices, even the latest iPhone and iPad, to be jailbroken without "re-tethering" (meaning the jailbreak was semi-permanent, and didn't need to be reinstalled after a power-down or reset). The only exception was the revised 2012 iPad 2 with the 32nm chipset, which remains resistant to the exploits used to jailbreak the other devices.
The updates represent the first successful unlocks of iOS 5.1.1, though they do require an older baseband that few users will have preserved. The updated RedSn0w will make it easier for owners of A4-based and earlier iOS devices to install the untethered jailbreak, which allows users to run unofficial apps. As the jailbreak is based on a flaw in iOS, the possibility of security risks or rendering the iPhone inoperative exists, though many users have accomplished the jailbreak successfully.
Unlocking, which is different from jailbreaking but requires the unit be jailbroken first, allows iOS devices to use microSIMs from carriers other than the ones users originally signed up with. Apple also sells unlocked iPhones, but at an unsubsidized price.
The new versions of RedSn0w are available for Mac and Windows. Simplified jailbreak tool PwnageTool has also been updated to version 5.1.1 to signify that it works with that iOS version. Ultrasn0w is available through the unofficial Cydia app repository, meaning a device must already be jailbroken in order to obtain it.

Leaked MacBook Pro specs suggest only minor changes
A label photo posted on the Chinese forum Weiphone suggests that the 13-inch MacBook Pro will only get minor changes in its next incarnation. Specifications indicate a 2.5GHz Ivy Bridge processor with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, and 4GB of RAM by default. The most notable additions are in fact Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0, the latter of which would be a first for an Apple product. Apple has usually preferred to emphasize Thunderbolt, a high-speed port standard it co-developed with Intel. Conspicuously absent is a rumored Retina display. Instead, the specs mention only a regular 1280x800 screen, despite hints that Apple would announce one or more Retina-equipped Macs as soon as WWDC on June 11th. The specs in fact leave many other specs intact, including RAM, hard drive space, and the SuperDrive.
The leak is attributed only to a "friend inside Apple," making it difficult to verify. It would contradict several other reports, though conceivably Apple might simply have not had Retina hardware ready in time for a planned Mac refresh. Several Mac lines are due for updates at this stage, and Apple may place more importance on having new systems ready for the launch of OS X Mountain Lion, which will ship sometime this summer.

WSJ sources back up transition away from Google in iOS Maps
The Wall Street Journal is backing up reports of Apple transitioning to a Google-less iOS Maps app. The paper cites "current and former Apple employees," who say that the app will arrive later this year. One source says that Apple could preview the new app at WWDC, which begins June 11th. There the company is widely expected to show off iOS 6, with which any version of Maps would have to be deeply integrated. The WSJ adds that Apple intends to encourage developers to embed its maps inside their own apps. Separate reports have indicated that a main feature of the new Maps will be 3D, using technology acquired from C3 Technologies.
Apple has been gradually drifting away from Google in recent years, mainly over the latter's entry into the smartphone and tablet markets through the Android platform. Apple has in fact sued several Android device makers, and removing Google's Maps presence would leave relatively little trace of the latter party in iOS outside of search and Gmail hooks.

Rumor has 'most' Macs getting updates at WWDC
Apple is planning to update "at least four out of their five" Mac lines at WWDC, according to sources for 9to5Mac. New systems should at least include two reconfigured 15-inch MacBook Pros, although what will happen with the 13- and 17-inch MacBook Pros is unknown. It's also believed that both the 11- and 13-inch MacBook Airs will be updated, as well as the iMac line. Less sure is what the fourth Mac to be updated will be, but it's speculated that it will be the Mac mini rather than the Mac Pro, since the Pro has been neglected for about two years. At least some of the new systems are generally expected to have Retina displays. That might conflict, though, with a leak from earlier today suggesting that the 13-inch MacBook Pro will stick to the same resolution as it has traditionally used.
The sources also contend that Apple will introduce a host of new accessories and peripherals, though no specific products have been mentioned. These could range anywhere from cases and cables through to keyboards, mice, or AirPort routers.

Google acquires Quickoffice
Google today announced that it has acquired Quickoffice, maker of a number of apps for viewing and editing Office documents. Twin announcements on both companies' blogs confirmed the deal. The acquisition is likely meant to advance Google's ambitions in the office productivity sector, and may play a role in the forthcoming collection of Nexus tablets.Quickoffice has provided software for the Symbian platform as well as more popular offerings for iOS and Android. Neither Google nor Quickoffice's postings go into the exact nature of the deal, so its value and how Quickoffice's team and operations might be integrated remains unknown.
Google has been steadily expanding the capabilities of its Google Docs productivity suite since its introduction. The suite now features an array of webfonts and templates, bringing its feature set more closely in line with its main competition, Microsoft Office. Google also recently added a research tool, incorporating the company's search prowess.
It's likely that the Quickoffice acquisition will figure heavily in the capabilities of the forthcoming Nexus tablets, seemingly confirmed in recent benchmark tests. Google has been working to make the Android version of Google Docs as capable as its desktop counterpart, and a rich, full-featured productivity suite could make a powerful selling point for Nexus tablets at their expected debut in the next few weeks.

Apple TV firmware updates to 5.0.2
Apple has posted another update of the firmware for the Apple TV, v5.0.2. The release applies to the black second- and third-generation set-tops only. Any changes in the firmware are thought to be minor, since no differences have been observed so far. It in fact continues to make references to MobileMe, which will soon be rendered obsolete.Apple could be saving any major revisions for next week, since one rumor has the company introducing a new interface at WWDC, possibly the same one that will be used for Apple's dedicated TV set. In the interim, the software's main upgrade could actually be a "control out" API, letting people control third-party components through Apple's interface rather than separate remotes.

Apple files legal response to e-book class-action suit
Apple has now filed a legal response to the similar-but-separate e-book "price-fixing" class-action lawsuit brought by 31 states that mirrors the charges against Apple and two of the five major publishers being pursued by the Department of Justice. Though covering many of the same points and defenses enumerated in the DOJ response, the company argues for dismissal of the civil lawsuit as being a duplicate of the ongoing federal one, among other defenses. The iPhone maker, in its response to the class-action charges, promises that quotes by Steve Jobs used in the DOJ lawsuit will "speak for themselves" and demonstrate that they are being misinterpreted or taken out of context. The document admits that "representatives of each of the publishers separately expressed varying degrees of unhappiness with Amazon

Sorkin: Jobs bio screenplay at 'earliest possible stage'
The screenplay for the Sony biopic based on Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs biography is in the "earliest possible stage," according to Aaron Sorkin. The screenwriter was interviewed today during the ongoing D10 Conference. "What I'll do is go through a long period that would not look to any casual observer like writing," he remarked. Instead, his early efforts on a screenplay will "look a lot more like watching ESPN to the untrained eye."Despite the procrastination, Sorkin commented that he isn't doing a linear adaptation of Isaacson's book. "Walter Isaacson wrote a terrific biography, but biographies when they're turned into movies -- and there have been some terrific ones -- but it's very difficult to shake the cradle to grave structure of a biography," he said. "I'm instead probably going to identify the point of friction of that appeals to me, and dramatize that."
He added that he's had some "hesitation" while considering the screenplay. "One of the hesitations I had in taking on the movie was that it's a little like writing The Beatles. There are so many people out there who know so much about him and who revere him. I saw a minefiled of disappointment frankly that I was going to do something and -- hopefully when I'm done with my research I'll be in the same ballpark of knowledge about Steve Jobs as so many people in this room are."
He further cautioned that people should not take the final movie as literal truth. "All I can say at this early stage of the game is, I think any time you are at the movies and you see the words 'the following is a true story,' you should think of it as a painting and not a photograph. You're going to get an authorial point of view, and there could probably be many movies about Steve Jobs, and in fact there will be two."
Aside from the Sorkin-penned movie, a different project starring Ashton Kutcher as Jobs is in development. It should in fact start shooting next month, and will likely beat the Sorkin project to theaters.

Apple prepping retail staff ahead of WWDC keynote?
Apple is reportedly preparing some of its retail staff to work late shifts ahead of the company's Worldwide Developers Conference. Unnamed sources have also told AppleInsider company representatives arrived unannounced at some retail locations, using access codes and keys to gain entry to the local server rooms. The Cupertino staffers allegedly brought a mysterious "black box" and briefly locked themselves in the server rooms without further explanation.Separate sources have reportedly told ifoAppleStore that certain staffers at a Texas Apple Store were asked to work late on June 5. The reasons for extended shifts remain unclear, though the company is not expected to unveil any new products, if any, until the WWDC keynote the following week on June 11. Speculation points to a possible rearrangement of floor items or a signage change.
Apple is rumored to be working on a number of new products, including a significant refresh to the MacBook Pro lineup that will bring retina displays and thinner builds. Other reports point to a new Maps app in iOS 6, photo sharing functionality for iCloud, and a new Apple TV OS.

Claim: Spotify nearly prevented from entering US by Apple?
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek answered a question posed during AllThingsD's D10 conference earlier today, claiming that "Apple was threatened by what we were doing" in regards to the streaming service. The 18-million-user-strong service took nearly two and a half years to complete the deals with record companies, leading to speculation that Apple may have slowed the process."There was some indication that was happening," said Sean Parker, Spotify director. Ellison, Catmull discuss Jobs' legacy at All Things D
Steve Jobs' name and legacy have been mentioned frequently at this week's All Things D conference in Rancho Palos Verdes in California, particularly during the keynote interview of Apple CEO Tim Cook. Two of Jobs' friends united to remember him in an interview yesterday -- Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Disney Animation President Ed Catmull. In addition, host Walt Mossberg announced that Jobs' own previous interviews from the conference series would be released.Ellison and Catmull agreed on many of Jobs' qualities, but also painted very different pictures of Jobs from different points in his life. Though his early approach to leadership was often unsuccessful (at least as often as it was successful), the two men also talked about how Jobs would -- sooner or later -- recognize and learn from most of his mistakes or bad qualities. As he got older, they said, the brash and confrontative -- sometimes petulant and cruel -- Jobs gave way to a man who had more positive qualities than negative ones, though he still retained some irritating obsessions.
Ellison recalled that he became tired of seeing a new, slightly-updated version of the then-unreleased Pixar movie Toy Story every time he would come to visit prior to the film coming out, or got bored by Jobs' obsession over minute details when it came to the customer experience. He spoke of how Jobs would spend hours in a mock-up Apple Store built ahead of the first such store's opening, discussing the checkout process (and bemoaning the flaws in the Oracle software that was used).
Catmull showed that Jobs could take a completely different approach, such as he did during his time at Pixar. He spoke of a CEO that never attended story meetings once he was sure he had the right team in place, and deferred story decisions to them -- quite the opposite of the obsessive perfectionist Jobs was known as at Apple. Catmull added that the "wilderness years" of being dismissed from his own company, his failure with NeXT and his time at Pixar helped re-shape the mercurial leader into a better manager.
Catmull described Jobs as being very kind and empathetic to people, though he would occasionally use strong opinions and even shouting matches to gauge how passionate people were and to test their arguments. Echoing comments by Cook earlier, Catmull noted that Jobs could be persuaded by an argument and consequently completely do a 180-degree turn on his previous opinion, becoming an idea's champion where he had previously dismissed it.
Ellison told the story of how he and Jobs originally met as neighbors in Woodside, California. Jobs' girlfriend at the time had given him a live peacock as a birthday present. The bird wandered over into Ellison's yard and woke him up, so Ellison confronted Jobs about the noisy bird.
Jobs confessed that he didn't like the bird either, but couldn't get rid of it until Ellison provided him with an excuse -- a neighbor's objection. Ellison also illustrated Jobs' contrarian nature, recalling a discussion about original plan to create Apple Stores. Ellison argued that "brick and mortar" stores "were dead" in the future economy. Jobs replied "we aren't using bricks and mortar; we're using glass and steel."
Ellison repeated another point about Jobs that has seemingly been absorbed by Cook -- that his genuine interest was in building great products that people would love, convinced that this mission much more important than building the largest or richest company. "He wasn't trying to be rich," Ellison said. "He wasn

Prepaid iPhone comes to US' Cricket Wireless on June 22
Cricket Wireless will start carrying the iPhone on June 22nd, the carrier has announced. The move will make it the first mainland US carrier to offer the iPhone as a prepaid device instead of on contract. An 8GB iPhone 4 will cost $400, while a 16GB iPhone 4S will be $500. A $55 monthly fee will get people "unlimited" voice, texting, and data, though data is throttled after reaching 2.3GB.Cricket iPhones are locked to the carrier, but still cost significantly less than unlocked models -- an unlocked iPhone 4 is $549. Apple has traditionally resisted making the iPhone available on prepaid plans, both in and outside of the US. An iPhone is substantially more expensive than most prepaid devices; contracts allow carriers to spread the real price over the course of two or more years.
Open Mobile, a carrier that serves only the US territory of Puerto Rico, was the first US-based carrier to offer prepaid iPhones, but Cricket's move on the mainland cements the new frontier. With Cricket onboard, Apple could be ready to secure deals with other American prepaid carriers. Likely candidates include Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile, which are both owned by Sprint. Sprint itself began carrying the iPhone for the first time last October.
