Analyst calls for 33M iPhones, 12M iPads in March quarter

01200updated 10:15 am EDT, Fri April 13, 2012 iPad numbers sit below Wall Street consensus

Apple will likely claim sales of 33 million iPhones and 12 million iPads for the March quarter, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The iPhone estimate is substantially higher than a Wall Street consensus of 30.5 million units; the iPad forecast, though, is a million below consensus. Munster suggests that investors will be alright with this, as the third-generation iPad sold 3 million units in its first three days.Regarding the iPhone he points out that the record 37 million units Apple sold in the December quarter is a sign that the device is still growing in popularity. A sixth-generation model later this year is expected to boost Apple's profits, though it may have help from Apple's long-anticipated TV set. Munster sees the TV being announced late into the December 2012 quarter, but actually shipping in 2013.

Mac sales in the March quarter are being projected to come in at 4.3 million units, a notch below the Street's target of 4.4 million. Fiscally though Munster expects Apple to report revenue up 6 percent and EPS up 16 percent, for figures of $38.3 billion and $11.41, respectively. By contrast, Street consensus is only $36.2 billion and $9.86. Apple will formally reveal the quarter's results on April 24th.
