Plants Vs. Zombies HD gets major update, adds Zen Garden

Late yesterday, PopCap Games pushed out a significant new update to its runaway hit Plants Vs. Zombies, now at version 1.9.2. The program has added 28 achievements, the formerly PC-only Zen Garden and other modes that were previously available in more expensive versions of the game and/or for other platforms. Some new levels and modes will only be available to players that have finished the main game, while others can be unlocked through coins.The full set updates is available in the iPad-only HD version of the game ($7), but the iPhone version ($3) has also been updated with a free new "Vasebreaker" level, and a total of eight additional levels players can access either by earning coins in-game or by buying coins through in-app purchases. Players will need 150,000 coins to unlock all the Vasebreaker levels, reports gaming site Kotaku

The iPad version features the Vasebreaker levels, along with a mode called "I, Zombie" that lets players play as zombies. Both include regular levels and "endless" variations. Above the first level of each of these modes, players will need to unlock additional levels through coins. There are a total of nine levels in each of the two modes.

In addition, the HD version includes four mini-games: Slot Machine, Portal Combat, Zombiquarium and Beghouled Twist, the latter a play on PopCap's own Bejeweled Twist game. The price to unlock the mini-games beyond Slot Machine is 50,000 coins. The update also provides Game Center leaderboards, and is now available for speakers of French, Italian, German and Spanish.
