Samsung names eight patents in new counterclaim versus Apple

Samsung has submitted a new counterclaim against Apple in a California lawsuit, accusing the company of violating eight patents, reports say. These cover a variety of fields, such as cellular communications, audio, video, sync, and software keyboards. Two of the patents are said to fall under FRAND terms, meaning they should be licensed to other companies in a fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory manner.Apple's original complaint accused Samsung of infringing eight patents, and named 17 products specifically. Samsung has yet to score any victories in any of its claims or counterclaims against Apple, which span multiple countries, but the company taken a more aggressive stance in recent months, forcing Apple to switch to an atypical defensive posture.

The two parties are expected to enter into settlement talks for some US patents within the next 90 days. The companies are likely unwilling to go to trial due to the time and expense involved, but have been continually escalating their legal battles, which now number in excess of 30 lawsuits.
