Valve CEO: I did not meet with Apple CEO Tim Cook

01201updated 08:10 pm EDT, Thu April 19, 2012 Newell says he would be happy to confer with Cook

Valve CEO Gabe Newell was asked directly about rumors that placed Tim Cook at the company's headquarters, presumably for a meeting with Newell, but he flatly denied the story and said he has never actually met Cook. Newell dispelled the story in a podcast interview for Seven Day Cooldown. According to Newell, executives at Valve were e-mailing each other asking if any of them were meeting with Cook, but it was just a rumor, reports gaming site Kotaku.Newell took the opportunity to say that he would enjoy meeting with the Apple CEO, saying he "a long list of things we'd love to see Apple do to support games and gaming better." While Apple has made great strides, particularly in iOS, in creating a more gaming-friendly platform, Newell's remarks suggest that Apple has room for improvement. He also clarified that no one at Valve had met with anyone else from Apple on the day in question.

It would be unusual for Cook to meet directly with a gaming company unless there were plans for a potential buyout or similar high-level deal. Valve, the creators of the Steam gaming network, would much more likely have contact with Internet Software and Services head Eddy Cue or iPhone team leader Scott Forstall.
