Apple files to gain control of iphone5.com domain

Apple has filed to gain control of the iphone5.com domain with the World Intellectual Property Organization, reports Fusible. With the next iPhone often referred to as the iPhone 5, the move has garnered a lot of attention, although it does not necessarily amount to a smoking gun. It was thought that the iPhone 4S would carry that name; if it is called the 5, the next iPhone will nevertheless be a sixth-generation device.The iPhone5.com domain currently points to a site operated by a third party and offers a small forum. While paying lip service to the fact the site is not affiliated with Apple, or Cisco who owns the rights to the iPhone brand name, it claims it has been created "for the sole purpose of entertainment and knowledge." The case is not the first time that Apple has sought to gain control from cyber squatters; it has previously seized control of seven domain names, such as iphone4s.com.

Expected to arrive in the fall (October being the most popular guess), the next iPhone is expected to carry a larger 4-inch display, and possibly a thinner and taller body. Whether or not it will be called the iPhone 5 remains a matter of speculation -- although widely expected to be called the iPad 3, after the iPad 2 released the previous year, Apple surprised the pundits by simply calling the third-generation iPad the "new iPad."
