Next iPhone may have 3.95-inch display with 1136x640 pixels

More details have emerged about the new 4-inch display that Apple is rumored to be testing for the next iPhone with 9to5 Mac claiming its sources have confirmed that Apple is currently testing an iPhone with a 3.95-inch display. The new display is also expected to retain a Retina Display level of pixel density, maintain the same width as the current display (1.94-inches), but be stretched to 16:9 ratio at 3.45-inches tall. If accurate, this would permit a 16:9 movie to play in its native aspect ratio using the full display sans the black bars while even potentially retaining the same overall phone size.According to 9to5 Mac, prototype handsets with the larger display are floating around the Cupertino campus clad in shells to hide their revised design from all unauthorized on-lookers. The two main prototypes are said to be in the PreEVT stage of development and carry the codenames N41AP (5,1) and N41AP (5,2). However, 9to5 Mac is unsure which of the two prototype handsets is expected to make its way to production.

Further, the additional display real-estate is expected to be fully utilized by a version of iOS 6 that will be specially tailored for the new display resolution. Apple is said to be experimenting by adding an additional row of icons to the home screen, bringing the total number of rows to five, plus the docked icons. Extended views of other iOS functions are also being accommodated. For example, while double-clicking on the home button reveals a single row of apps in the app tray, this could be doubled to show twice as many at any one time.
