According to sources of Digitimes, Apple will release a cheap Macbook Air later this year, as a response on the upcoming second-generation Ultrabooks. Although there are always rumors about the Macbook lineup, this is not the first time this particular rumor has appeared. But it looks a logical step for Apple for gaining a bigger share in a very competitive notebook market by offering a broader price-range for this popular product.
Currently, Apple's 11-inch 64GB MacBook Air is priced at US$999 with a 128GB version priced at US$1,199. The 13-inch 128GB version is priced at US$1,299 and 256GB version is US$1,599. Although the Macbook Air is extremely popular, but a lot of people do struggle with the price. According to the new rumors, Apple would target the low-end of the market for a price of $799. Unfortunately, nothing is said about the screensize and other specifications.
Digitimes quoted this rumor from an unmentioned source in Apple’s upstream supply-chain. Digitimes has a reasonable record for his sources, so let’s have a look at this somewhat closer.
