Proview claims progress in settlement talks with Apple

Progress is being made in settlement talks between Apple and Proview regarding the Chinese iPad trademark lawsuit, lawyers for Proview claim. One of them, Xie Xianghui, recently spoke with China's official Xinhua news agency, and said that the two parties have discussed a compensation package. Apple has even allegedly mentioned a specific sum, but Proview has yet to agree to anything."We feel the attitude of Apple Inc. has changed," says Xie. "Although they expressed they were willing to negotiate, they have never taken any actions before, but now they are having conversations with us, and we have begun to consult on the case." He also comments that it would be good for both sides if a settlement is achieved "as soon as possible."

Some Chinese officials have stated that they see Proview as the legitimate owner of the iPad trademark, at least for the time being. Apple has long claimed that it acquired the mainland Chinese rights at the same time as it bought other international rights from Proview, but Proview has insisted that mainland China was omitted from the deal. Without a trademark arrangement the iPad could theoretically be taken off the Chinese market, and indeed Proview has already manged to secure some local government confiscations.
