An interesting hack for jailbroken iPads and iPhones has surfaced that may show off a future improvement in iPad text editing. YouTube user Daniel Hooper published his text editing concept video on Thursday. Rather than selection on the text itself, gestures move the cursor and allow for text selection without removing hands from the virtual keyboard. Developer Kyle Howells took Hooper's concept and released SwipeSelection on the unofficial app store Cydia Saturday.Essentially, a one finger drag across the keyboard moves the cursor slowly, two finger drags move the cursor faster. Text is selected by the same drag across the keyboard, but with the virtual shift key held down to select the text. MacNN has done a hands-on with the tweak, and finds that it does show a speed increase in both cursor movement and text selection while writing and editing compared to Apple's default configuration.
SwipeSelection is to jailbroken iOS devices now on the BigBoss Cydia code repository for free. An organized effort at iDownloadBlog is underway to petition Apple to use the new selection method in a revision of the iOS.
