One of the classic computer games, the first-person shooter Wolfenstein 3D, is celebrating its 20th anniversary year with a new browser-based version of the game as well as a promotional giveaway of the iOS version of the original game for a limited time. While the original Castle Wolfenstein first appeared on an Apple II computer in 1981, Wolfenstein 3D (the more familiar version of the game) debuted on DOS in 1992.The program was one of the most popular of the early first-person shooter games, and was a direct inspiration for later games such as Doom and Quake. The web browser version faithfully recreates the DOS game, and is available for modern browsers on all platforms. While no official Android version exists, the deluxe iOS release (which contains all six episodes of the original game, plus the Spear of Destiny prequel) has been reduced to free (from $2) for a limited time.
Players are cast as BJ Blazkowicz, who has managed to escape his cell in a Nazi stronghold and must escape. Eventually the game moves beyond Nazi soldiers and Blazkowicz must also fight zombies, super soldiers and eventually a cyborg-esque version of Hitler himself. Some secret levels exist, including one that recreates the popular Pac-Man game from a first-person perspective. The game has spawned numerous different platform versions, over 800 mostly fan-created maps and even a 2001 reboot with updated graphics and a different storyline (though set in the same castle).
