Darkness II, Linux Tycoon coming to OS X

01200updated 10:00 pm EDT, Thu May 3, 2012 Mob demon violence and Linux come to the Mac

OS X received two new additions to its gaming library today, as first-person shooter The Darkness II and simulation game Linux Tycoon have been released for the platform. The big-budget mob shooter and the indie-flavored Linux distro simulator mark opposite extremes of the gaming continuum, but are notable appearances on the Mac. The Darkness II is a Cider port done by TransGaming and is inspired by the 2007 comic book series that produced the original game.In The Darkness II, players assume the role of Jackie Estacado, head of a New York crime family and the wielder of a powerful and brutal destructive force, the Darkness. Using the Darkness, Estacado dispatches his enemies in a variety of violent ways, with the help of several impish assistants.

In Linux Tycoon, available for $5 at the game's site, players design, build, and manage the distribution of their own simulated Linux build. The simulation features deliberately "8-bit" style graphics and "retro" computer style.

Mac-based gamers typically have a tough time keeping up with the newest game offerings, as there is usually a sizable delay between the release of popular games on PC and consoles and their appearance on the Mac platform. This trend has seen some notable exceptions in the past few years, with a number of ports of big budget games appearing on the Mac only a few months after or in some cases simultaneously with their debuts on Windows and the consoles.
