HP tops Apple in client PC market

71602updated 04:46 pm EDT, Fri May 4, 2012 HP edges apple by 40,000 to climb back on top

According to new figures out from analyst firm Canalys, Q1 2012 saw Apple slip from the top spot in the client PC market. Thanks to a boost in shipments, former number one company HP retook its perch atop the market for at least one quarter. The report, though, may signal troubles ahead for PC manufacturers, as it suggests seismic trends at work in the marketplace. The research firm estimates that Apple shipped 11.8 million iPads in Q1, in addition to 4 million desktops and notebooks, for a total of 15.8 million units. Canalys pegs HP's shipments at about 40,000 more units than Apple, edging out the iPad maker for the number one spot. In third place was Lenovo, followed by Acer and Dell.

Canalys' analysis showed total client PC shipments at 107 million units, up 21 percent from the previous quarter. Notebook and desktop PC shipments were up 11 and eight percent, respectively, while netbook shipments were down 34 percent year-over-year. Tablets, though, were up 200 percent year-over-year, in what cold be a troubling sign for just about all manufacturers save Apple.

Tablets represented 19 percent of all client PC shipments in Q1, up from seven percent the same quarter last year. In the United States, tablets are approaching 40 percent of all client PC shipments. The iPad dominates the tablet market, so the trend toward tablets definitely plays in Apple's favor; but Canalys cites positive signs among other tablet manufacturers as indicative of increased competitiveness in the sector. In addition to the successes companies like Samsung have had in shipping tablets, Canalys noted that increased adoption of Ivy Bridge-powered ultrabooks is cause for optimism among manufacturers.
