The new iPhone will be taller and thinner, and have a flat, primarily metal back, iLounge claims to have learned. Rough dimensions are said to be 125x58.5x7.4mm, adding an extra 10mm in height, while cutting thickness by almost 2mm. The metal will allegedly not cover the entire back but just a middle section, somewhat resembling the look of current iMacs. The claim may reinforce suggestions that Apple is skipping a curved metal back. Most of the rest of the exterior should continue to use glass, possibly Gorilla Glass 2, which can be thinner and continue to have the same strength as the Gorilla Glass on the iPhone 4S.The extra length will support a larger screen, approximately to a 4-inch diagonal, iLounge claims. This could force app developers to not only accommodate a larger screen but a different aspect ratio, since iLounge also suggests that the new phone will be "virtually identical" in width.
The site also indicates that Apple is moving ahead with a smaller dock connector for the phone. The port is described as using a "pill shape," and being slightly larger than one of the speaker holes on the iPhone 4S. It may also have fewer pins, possibly 16 versus the current 30. Apple is moreover expected to carry the connector over to all future handhelds, including a new iPod touch.
