SmartBackup reaches version 3.3, adds iOS-style looks

Freeridecoding has updated its backup and syncing utility SmartBackup to version 3.3, which offers general improvements as well as a sleek, iOS-inspired new look for the user interface. The program is aimed as a more-configurable and intelligent alternative to Apple's own Time Machine software, which eschews customization in favor of simplification. The new version is also already compatible with OS X 10.8, Mountain Lion, which is coming later this summer.SmartBackup seeks to find the middle ground between powerful customization options for cloning, backing up or syncing drives or folders without bogging down the user experience with endless options. The program can sync multiple source items to various destinations or make bootable clones of the entire hard drive as desired.

The program follows Time Machine's pattern of doing an initial full sync and then just updating the sync after that to save time. Deleted or changed files can be optionally archived as well. The program can be customized using iCal, Automator or even command-line processes, making it easy to include in shell scripts.

The upgrade is free for all SmartBackup 3.x users, and costs $15 for a single-user license. A fully-functional free trial version is also available. SmartBackup 3.3 requires Mac OS X 10.6 or later.
