Twitpic, a widely-used service for posting photos and videos on Twitter, took a step towards direct competition with Instagram, which was recently acquired by Facebook. It has released a free app for iPhone and iPod Touch includes basic editing tools, filters and a comments section. Users can also see daily popular content and photos or videos from people the user follows. The company originally launched in 2008 and for many users was the default photo-sharing service until Twitter began its own photo-sharing service in a collaboration with PhotoBucket. Despite the competition from Twitter itself, Twitpic still has upwards of 35 million regular users, and says it will look beyond just Twitter in an effort to further grow the company going forward.
Twitpic is thought to have teamed up with iOS photo editor company Aviary to provide the filters and editing controls. An Android version should be out sometime this month.
