As promised by Valve in 2011, the follow-up to one of the most popular player-versus-player online games of all time, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is shipping for the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, and Steam for Windows and OS X on August 21. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a combined effort from both Valve, and Hidden Path Entertainment. Demos are available for play at this week's Electronics Entertainment Expo. The new version of Counter-Strike features new maps, character classes, and weapons. Updated versions of original Counter-Strike maps such as "de_dust" are making the transition as well along with new gameplay modes, matchmaking capability, leaderboards, and more. Cross-platform play is listed as a feature of the game, but it is unclear if this is just Macintosh and PC players, or if the competitive pool contains console players as well.

The original Counter-Strike was released in 1999 and is a user-created modification of Valve's GoldSrc engine, the game engine used in Half-Life. As of 2011, the Counter-Strike franchise has sold over 27 million units. The Xbox Live version is expected to cost 1200 Microsoft Points (approximately $15), and the Playstation Network version retails for $15. No Macintosh or PC pricing has been announced.
