The Kindle 4.1 update has arrived for the $79 advertising-supported basic Kindle reader. The upgrade brings a higher contrast display mode, with a "crisper" reading font. Extended parental controls regulate access control on the experimental web browser, archived items, and the Kindle store. Format support has been increased to include Amazon Kindle Format 8. Wired magazine has remastered its first issue on the iPad as a free Adobe-sponsored download. Re-envisioned using the latest publishing tools, the iPad version is a page-identical reproduction of the original issue with embedded editorial content on the history of the magazine's production, and what became of the magazine's subjects over time. The issue is available through the Wired magazine app (free).
Recycled skateboard waste repurposed into iPhone backings
Wood iPhone and Macbook case creator Grove has introduced the SkateBack -- a back-panel adhesive cover for the iPhone 4 and 4S constructed from waste material from a local skateboard factory. The approximately .06-inch thick backings are available in three general designs, the multicolored and dense "Vibrant", the more sedate "Calm", and the bi-color "Neutral". All three backs are available from Grove for $39.
