Kanex ATV Pro adapts AppleTV HDMI to VGA

Apple and iOS device accessory maker Kanex launched a VGA output solution for the AppleTV and any other HDMI device today -- the Kanex ATV Pro. The device is tailored towards adapting the HDMI output of the AppleTV (or other HDMI device) to a more standard VGA plus audio prevalent in educational institutions' projectors.The Kanex ATV Pro features a power-plug free design, resolution support up to 1080p, a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack for audio, HDCP 1.2 support, full AirPlay support, and an output vertical frequency of either 50 or 60Hz. Kanex has tested the device on every generation of AppleTV, including the recently released model, as well as the BlackBerry Playbook, Blu-ray DVD players, and unspecified game consoles.

Apple's first generation AppleTV arrived in the winter of 2007 and featured both HDMI and component outputs. Three years elapsed until the release of the second generation (black) AppleTV in the Fall of 2010, with a third revision in February of this year. None of the devices as shipped included VGA or composite outputs, making them difficult to integrate with legacy projectors commonly found in schools.
