Judge Lucy Koh has for the second time ordered Apple and Samsung to further reduce the total number of patent complaints filed against each other before their case goes to trial. If the judge's direction isn't taken, the trial could be delayed until 2013. Both sides point to the opposing counterpart as the reason for the lack of streamlining.Following the first round of suit reductions, the two companies were left with five trade dress claims, an antitrust claim, 16 patents, and six trademarks to hash out, spread over 37 different products.
Earlier this week, legal wrangling by Apple forced Samsung manufactured court displays to have their branding obscured, and Steve Jobs biography quotes be excluded. Samsung separately demanded that Apple blogs, and non-expert newspaper reporter testimony be excluded.
The scope of the entire Apple versus Samsung legal fight encompasses 50 complaints in 10 countries. Settlement talks for US matters are scheduled for later in the month.
