Canon intros EOS-1D C: DSLR with 4K video recording

01600updated 10:00 am EDT, Thu April 12, 2012 Canon EOS-1D C becomes real

Canon made its concept camera real on Thursday by revealing the EOS-1D C ahead of NAB. The variant on its highest-end DSLR is the first camera of its kind to record 4K (4096x2160) video. Although capped at 24 frames per second, the 8-bit, 4:2:2 video is advanced enough that it can be used as part of a professional movie shoot using greater-than-HD video cameras from companies like RED while keeping the size much smaller for handheld recording. The 18.1-megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor, its maximum ISO 25,600 in video mode, and 12FPS continuous still shooting are similar to the EOS-1D X the 1D C is based on, but it approaches video in a different manner. 4K video uses the full sensor width, but 1080p video can either occupy the same dimensions or use a Super 35-equivalent portion in the middle of the sensor to mimic conventional movie cameras. The lower resolution affords frame rates up to 60p for situations where speed trumps sheer crispness.

Extra touches bring the ability to keep the preview LCD on while linked to HDMI, for better monitoring during an active shoot, as well as a headphone jack to gauge whether audio from an external microphone is producing intended results.

Canon will only give a vague 2012 timeframe for the EOS-1D C, but the world-first 4K video DSLR will carry a premium, putting it at more than twice the price of a 1D X at $15,000. Unlike the C300, it will need EF or EF Cinema Lenses and can't take PL mounts.

Canon preps EOS Cinema C500 with 4K video

41600updated 10:45 am EDT, Thu April 12, 2012 Canon intros C300 successor for 4K shooting

Canon on Thursday made a number of announcements relating to high-end pro video, starting with the EOS-1D C and now the EOS C500 and C500 PL. Either of the C500 models is meant for cinematographers and shoots up to 4K resolution (4096x2160) video, though the former takes EF-mount lenses and the latter accommodates PL-mount glass. They output in 10-bit uncompressed RAW format and meet SMPTE production standards. The camera also simultaneously records 50Mbps HD proxy video to its CF card to ease offline editing. At its heart is a new Super 35mm-equivalent CMOS sensor rated that is rated at approximately 8.85 megapixels. The base design sports dual 3G-SDI ports and a larger, non-rotating grip as compared to the current C300. It has dual CF card slots, but only 1080p video can be recorded onto them. ISO ranges from 320 to 20,000, same as the C300.

The other supported 4K format is 3840x2160 for 4K TV, and either format can be set at between one and 60 frames per second. The same frame rate is an option for the 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 signal format with 2K output. When set to a 10-bit YCrCb 4:2:2 mode, the camera can be set at up to 120 frames per second.

The cameras will launch later this year, though no pricing or release dates are known. Based on current hardware that's somewhat comparable, pricing is expected to fall into higher five-digit figures. Prototypes will be on display at the NAB show that kicks off on April 16 in Las Vegas.
