US iPhone, international iPad expansions continue

01600updated 10:00 am EDT, Fri April 20, 2012 iPad comes to 12 more countries

This Friday marks another set of expansions for iPhone and iPad sales. The iPhone 4S is now available through another five regional US carriers, including Alaska Communications, Appalachian Wireless, GCL, Cellcom, and nTelos. The first regional carrier to get the iPhone was C Spire, which joined national options AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. The third-generation iPad is meanwhile launching in 12 more regions. With the exception of Croatia and Cyprus, the focus is on non-European countries: Brunei, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Panama, St. Maarten, South Korea, Venezuela, and Uruguay complete the list.

Apple uses a gradual approach to launching products in order to ensure demand is reasonably satisfied in key countries -- the US, UK, Canada, France, and Germany, among others -- before straining production any further. Legal hurdles can be another area of concern though, such as in China, where wireless devices must clear several certifications to go on sale.

Apple stocking international parts for London Olympics

21200updated 04:30 am EDT, Wed April 11, 2012 Wants to be ready to help journalists

Apple is quietly stocking its London stores with extra and international parts (such as replacement keyboards) to help cope with the expected "onslaught" of international journalists, many of whom use Apple products, coming to cover the 2012 London Olympics. The event, scheduled for July, is expected to see over 10,000 international print journalists as part of the 325,000 daily visitors coming to London for the games, reports TUAW.The company plans to keep strong replacement stock of international variations on the keyboards for its MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and the discontinued MacBook keyboards, one of the few parts on a Mac that has significant regional variations. Apple's power supplies for all models of Mac can handle a range of voltages from 110-240, but the company also sells an official plug adapter kit that is expected to be popular.

In addition to print journalists, Apple products have become the notebooks of choice for bloggers, new media and TV/Radio journalists. The numbers of these journalists will likely dwarf the print reporters, but the specific numbers expected aren't known.

Apple may also need more international keyboards for various Mac models to enable them to sell more Macs to the expected scores of international visitors, many of whom will be shopping in London's most popular retail venues, including the various Apple Stores around the city. The company would be able to offer customized Mac products with international keyboards on demand during the games.

Google Currents goes international, adds translation

01600updated 01:50 pm EDT, Wed April 11, 2012 Google Currents expands beyond US

Google Currents branched out beyond the US on Wednesday with its 1.1 update for Android (Google Play) and iOS (App Store). The curated news app now reaches worldwide and has both translated US publications and local publications. For non-native content, Google Translate has now been woven into the app itself and will optionally convert between any one of 38 languages.Syncing has been given its own significant update. Rather than load all at once, each "edition" only loads content as it appears, automatically, when in a full online mode. Readers can choose to mark certain editions for offline reading and cache them for a long flight. Google estimates that syncing is now about seven times faster.

Both the Android and iOS versions are universal and reflow to fit either smartphones or full-size tablets. They respectively need Android 2.2 and iOS 4.0. Although accessible in virtually all countries, the local trending content is limited to Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the US.
