New Apple retail head issues first letter to Apple Stores

01200updated 10:42 am EDT, Tue May 8, 2012 Promises 'more to share in the weeks ahead'

Apple's new head of retail, John Browett, has issued an initial letter to Apple Store workers through the company's Retail Me app. "Team," it begins. "At last I've officially started at Apple, and it's great to be here. "I've had the chance to meet many of you at stores in the US and across Europe, and one of my top priorities for the coming months is to meet many more people on our team around the world."It's incredibly impressive to be on the inside of Apple Retail," he continues. "Many of my friends, relatives, and former colleagues have written to tell me how lucky I am to be working with such a great group of people, and I couldn't agree more. While our stores are fantastic and our products are amazing, it really is our people who make the difference in creating the best retail experience.

"There will be much more to share in the weeks ahead, and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone over time.

"I am thrilled to work with all of you as we build the future of Apple Retail together," the letter concludes.

Browett was previously the CEO of major UK retailer Dixons. He is replacing Ron Johnson, who is credited for much of the success of Apple's retail chain, but left Apple in November to become the CEO of US retailer JC Penney. Initially, no successor to Johnson was lined up.

German court stays, delays separate Apple v. Samsung issues

01600updated 03:59 pm EDT, Fri May 4, 2012 Stay based on pending invalidation ruling

Germany's Mannheim Regional Court has stayed an Apple lawsuit against Samsung over a photo gallery page-flipping patent, says FOSS Patents. The case is now waiting on the resolution of a invalidation proceeding at the country's Federal Patent Court. Regional courts are noted to stay patent infringement cases only if the defendant shows a high chance of a patent being invalidated. Apple actually manged to enforce the patent in the Netherlands last summer, and in Munich in March. Samsung and Motorola have also already been able to devise workarounds; it's speculated, though, that an Apple victory could be used simply to ensure that Android developers don't mimic any iOS features in the future.

The Mannheim court has also postponed a separate Apple v. Samsung decision, one on a pinch-to-zoom patent. Internal delays are blamed; a ruling will however take place on May 11th.

Adobe issues Flash plug-in, player 'critical' updates

11607updated 10:35 pm EDT, Fri May 4, 2012 'Priority 1' issue affects PC, Mac, Android

A "critical" security issue that can cause the Flash plug-in to crash and allow a malicious program potential access to the system is addressed in the latest Adobe security update for both the Flash player standalone program for CS users and web browser plug-in for Macs, Windows and Android systems. Users are strongly advised to upgrade to version 11.2.202.235 on Macs and Windows, and v11.1.111.8 on Android (version 11.1.115.9 for Android 4.0).The vulnerability is referred to obliquely in Adobe's Security Bulletin accompanying the release, but the update is available either through the program's own auto-update mechanism or by visiting the Flash Player update page. Adobe reports that instances of the malicious takeover technique have been seen "in the wild" exploiting Internet Explorer, but the vulnerability could affect any other of the mentioned platforms.

The company lists some known issues with even this latest version, including two flaws specific to the Mac: the mouse cursor does not change to the hand pointer when mousing over TLF links, and Adobe AIR crashes in late-model Macs running 10.7.2. Flash has been saddled with numerous security issues over the years, which has fostered a haste to move to the HTML5 standard whenever possible (such as for video and audio content delivery).

Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs listed security as one of the principle concerns in Apple's decision to ship iOS without support for Flash, even though it was the dominant media and animation web vehicle at the time. Adobe itself has taken a leadership role in developing animation and other techniques with HTML5 and other standard web technologies such as CSS and JavaScript, competing against its own standard in some ways.

MS issues SP2 Office for Mac 2011, gets more Lion-friendly

11206updated 08:00 pm EDT, Thu April 12, 2012 Full-screen support, document connection, more

Microsoft has updated Office for Mac 2011 to version 14.2.0 (SP2), a significant update with a number of changes and improvements, among them support for Lion's full-screen mode in PowerPoint, and the addition of a drag-and-drop feature in Document Connection for Lion. The update fixes numerous small issues, introduces a new sync model for Exchange e-mail, and improves the robustness and rebuild utility of the e-mail database. The Document Connection feature also gets improved support for SkyDrive, particularly at the root level, and issues with SharePoint file uploading are resolved. For the entire suite of programs, the Italian and German grammar checker is improved to be able to check grammar even when a document only has some sentences in those languages.

Outlook for Mac's improved database should help prevent corruptions, instability and crashes by improving the ability to recover from certain kinds of errors. The program will automatically check, and rebuild if needed, the database using Database Utility. The update also adds the ability to cancel a database rebuild.

Outlook has also been tweaker to be more GMail-friendly, including improved IMAP account syncing and the ability to map some mail folders automatically. The program is now more responsive during syncing, deleting multiple records, sending and displaying messages. In addition, Outlook is now able to download an Exchange e-mail in parts, downloading text first and adding the option for the user to additionally download large images or attachments if needed.

Distribution list expansion functionality is now included by resting the mouse on a distribution list name, which will produce the option of expanding the list into individual names. Also improved the interaction with the calendar, particularly scheduling resources as well as the addition of a preference to show calendar week numbers.

In addition to Full Screen view support in Lion, PowerPoint also gains functionality for pasting special kinds of hyperlinks (such as App Store URLs and others), and fixes an issue where a list of co-authors of a presentation isn't properly seen. The update also fixes an issue in Microsoft Word in which the program couldn't send PDF files as faxes, and updates the user information display in a viewed template.

The 14.2.0 update requires an Intel Mac running OS X 10.5.8 or later that has already had Office 2011 SP1 applied.
