Apple jumps into the top 20 on Fortune 500

Fortune Magazine released its annual Fortune 500 list of America's largest corporations, and Apple has zoomed up the list to the number 17 slot. The new ranking is a sizable improvement over its 35th -place ranking last year, but the iPad maker still ranks second in technology, behind Hewlett-Packard. Last year, Apple rode runaway sales of its iPhone and iPad to become the most valuable company in the world, boosting its earnings by 85 percent to $25.9 billion. Sales for the iPad and iPhone totaled $67 billion in 2011, more than twice the sales for 2010. On the whole, Fortune pegged profit growth for the technology sector at three percent, marking Apple's earnings as a "giant" contribution to growth in the industry.

Apple looks likely to continue its successes going forward, with remarkable sales already for the newest iPad and anticipation still high for a refresh of its iPhone line later this year, as well as a possible lower-cost refresh of its MacBook Air line and persistent rumors of an Apple-branded television. All these, along with CEO Tim Cook's performance so far, boosted Fortune's estimation of the company's fortunes going forward. Topping the list this year was Exxon Mobil, followed by Walmart Stores and Chevron.

SMARTReporter jumps to version 3 with new look, improvements

CoreCode, the developers of disk drive health checker SMARTReporter, released the final version of the free, open-source version and have debuted an overhauled SMARTReporter 3 with substantial new features, new system requirements, a new distribution model and a new price ($5). The program has been completely rewritten and redesigned and adds support for external disk I/O checking, hot-plugged disks, an integrated log-viewer and many other features.The program uses modern ATA, SATA and eSATA hard drives' built-in SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) systems in an effort to give users some advance warning of malfunctions that could portend disk failure. Those who backup irregularly or rely on constant disk access on an above-average level can use warnings to update backups and prepare standby drives if the problems worsen. With the support of additional software, the program can also check some USB and Firewire disks.

The move to a minimum OS requirement of 10.6.6 and the Mac App Store in the new version has ensured future Mountain Lion compatibility, says CoreCode, and offered the ability to add in an extensive number of user options for monitoring hard drive health. A new "Status" tab shows at a glance a summary of all four disk checks and any notifications, and users can set how often failed tests should trigger problem notifications. The entire UI has been overhauled to be more capable and easy to use.

The program now automatically detects and warns of any configuration problems with notifications, lets users schedule regular SMART parameter checks and short self-tests, and now includes an option to display the icon in the Dock. Users can set SMARTReporter 3 to send an e-mail report of all disk checks (handy for remote administrators), display a graph of all collected information over time, and customize problem notifications for I/O and RAID issues, including the actual text of the notification.

Additional UI features include an integrated log-viewer, context-sensitive help files, and a new optional check for free disk space. Users can now check for I/O error-checking from non-admin accounts, and exclude some disks from I/O error checks. Some features from the previous version of SMARTReporter are not yet implemented in the new 3.0 version, including non-English localizations, setting separate SMART checking intervals on a per-disk basis, and error checking for unmounted-but-available disks. These will be added back in in future updates.

Just prior to the arrival of the new paid SMARTReporter 3, CoreCode posted a final version of the free SMARTReporter, version 2.7.2. That version, which continues to work on Lion, added several languages (including Simplified Chinese, Swedish and Italian), fixed a memory leak, added two new icon sets and fixed some bugs for enhanced stability.
