Verizon ships 6.3m smartphones, 3.2m iPhones

21602updated 08:15 am EDT, Thu April 19, 2012 Verizon Q1 2012 defined by smartphone push

(Update: iPhone figures) Verizon reported winter quarter results that were defined by smartphones, albeit with current gaps in its data. The company saw a slight 4.6 percent increase in revenue to $28.2 billion but a much wider 15.7 percent jump in its net profit, which it quantified as 59 cents per share. Smartphones were key to the growth, Verizon said: 6.3 million were sold in the period, making up 72 percent of all its subscription phones.Unlike in past quarters, Verizon didn't initially mention how many iPhones had been activated on its network. LTE devices were now more important on the network, but at 2.9 million were still less than half of Verizon's share; 2.1 million were smartphones. Since appearing on the provider last year, the iPhone has typically been the dominant smartphone on the network and may make up the bulk of the 3.4 million. The carrier may be waiting for Apple's own results, due April 24.

About 42 percent of those upgrading to smartphones were first-time smartphone users, Verizon said. The overall smartphone push was having a tangible impact on results, kicking its average revenue per person up 4.9 percent from a year ago. Churn, or customer turnover, was still minimal at just under one percent.

The cellular side added a net total of 734,000 customers and brought Verizon to exactly 93 million total customers, 88 million of which were regular subscriptions and the rest prepaid.

More detail of the US smartphone landscape should come both through Apple's results as well as AT&T's, both of which arrive the same day.

Update: during its fiscal results call, Verizon said it activated 3.2 million iPhones in the winter, or nearly all of its 3G devices and 51 percent of all its smartphones. It added that there were about 138,000 prepaid tablets, although 62 percent of its 390,000 total tablet adopters were regular subscription users.

HTC slams hardware keyboards, ships One X in Canada

01604updated 02:15 pm EDT, Fri April 20, 2012 HTC thinks hardware keyboards hurt progress

HTC has kept itself in the limelight in the past day with both revelations of a shift in its attitude towards touch as well as shipping its first LTE-equipped One X. Speaking at the company's Freqs event in Seattle, creative lead Claude Zellweger told MobileBurn and others in attendance that HTC was backing away from hardware keyboards. Partly echoing what the late Steve Jobs said in 2007, he saw physical keyboards as still having some interest but ultimately being obstacles. Going all-touch let HTC have the freedom to design the way it wanted."We feel that putting too much effort into that

WD ships Scorpio Blue drive in 7mm ultrabook-friendly form

01600updated 08:25 am EDT, Wed April 11, 2012 WD Scorpio Blue now ready in slim form

Western Digital on Wednesday started shipping a new version of its Scorpio Blue hard drive tailored for ultrabooks and otherwise thin notebooks. At 7mm tall, it fits in spaces where regular 9.5mm drives won't but can still have as much as 500GB of space. The design has the simultaneous upside of lower power consumption and is purportedly the most efficient spinning hard drive in the field. The SATA drive has added shock resistance of up to 400Gs and is billed as being quiet.

Although most ultrabooks will only get the drive pre-assembled from the factory, Western Digital is making the 7mm Scorpio Blue available as an aftermarket upgrade for most computers. A 320GB capacity will be available for $80, while the 500GB peak costs only slightly more at $100. Either should be available today.

Nokia warns of lower phone oultook, ships 2m Lumias

01603updated 08:50 am EDT, Wed April 11, 2012 Nokia predicts dire Q1 esults

Nokia sent out a warning on Wednesday that its results for the first quarter of 2012 would be worse than expected as its smartphone sales continued to struggle. Its operating margin would now be down by three percent instead of flat, while that for the just-started spring quarter would be similar or lower. "Competitive industry dynamics" and tighter profit margins were to blame, Nokia said, making clear allusions to fiercer competition from Android and the iPhone. While improving versus the million-plus units of the fall, Windows Phone sales weren't growing quickly enough to offset plunges for Symbian devices. Nokia is now known to have moved two million smartphones in the first three months of 2012, which is commonly believed to be dominated by the Lumia 800, but is still largely depending on its outgoing OS for the core of its sales. CEO Stephen Elop still saw it as part of a gradual shift.

"Our disappointing Devices & Services first quarter 2012 financial results and outlook for the second quarter 2012 illustrates that our Devices & Services business continues to be in the midst of transition," Elop claimed.

Among some of the strategies to bolster its performance, Nokia was both "increasing investments" to both grow the Lumia line and put it in more countries, as well as to invoke "tactical pricing actions" for its S40 feature phones as new phones came into play. The Finnish firm would speed up cost-cutting measures and might undertake "significant structural actions" if necessary, implying added job cuts.

Windows Phone sales are likely to go up in the spring following the launches of the Lumia 900 and Lumia 610. The lowered forecast could still see Nokia bleed more market share again and dash Microsoft's hopes of buying a larger position for Windows Phone through its multi-billion dollar Nokia deal.
